empty space 3/3/07
On Saturday I went out to gather some photos from around town of the recent snow. Mostly, I spent the time observing and was amazed at how easily I could visualize spring. Though this photo doesn't suggest spring.
The thing that caught me off guard is the now empty space where the old Guthrie Theater used to stand. Yes, the Guthrie is gone. I didn't even know that a decision had been made on what to do with the old building. It was eerie to see so much nothingness. I was also somewhat confused as this event went largely unnoticed by the local media. Or maybe I'm just unplugged from TV more than I thought. Regardless, I would have expected much more of a protest from the nostalgic types here in the city. My next thought was, "Please not another condo!" A Google search revealed that the plan is to expand the Sculpture Garden onto this site. Now it all makes sense. There is probably nothing more appropriate. And now I understand why no one (to my knowledge) stood in the way...
